“Asperger's Syndrome – ‘That Explains Everything’: Strategies for Education, Life
and Just About Everything Else”. Publisher’s notes
Stephen says – Although if the response of the kids from the school I contacted they
would have preferred it to be called – ‘All intolerant people should be shot’.
As you would expect it’s a book about my own experiences of working with students
with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) who frequently found the school environment challenging,
despite often having a high level of academic ability. Their unique social and sensory
difficulties never seem to be fully understood or accommodated. Hopefully the book
explains practical approaches in education and care. I have tried to use anecdotes
from the schools experience to illustrate potential problem areas and put forward
solutions. I have included the students and parents own perception of how positive
the experience was for them.
Hopefully the book is a comprehensive and accessible resource which highlights one
model for working with students with Asperger’s Syndrome. It should be an easy read
with many humorous examples of how students get things wrong and are misunderstood. I
hope it is useful for teachers, carers, parents and professionals working with young
people with AS, as well as anyone who finds the world of Asperger’s Syndrome as interesting
and intriguing as I still do.
